JUST IN!

Peter Bobchin, Esq., partner of the Lane Law Firm, recently volunteered his time as a Judge in a National Moot Court Competition held at Pace University School of Law, in White Plains, New York. The competition was sponsored by the American Mock Trial Association and involved teams of undergraduates from colleges throughout the United States. The students had to prepare for both sides of a mock criminal trial, and not told whether they would be representing the defense or prosecution until moments before the trial was to begin.

Peter found judging the competition to be rewarding, and a way to share with the students some of his experience and knowledge as a trial attorney. He was also impressed with poise and the level of professionalism displayed by the students during the competition.

EVENTS

  • John Lane has been selected to participate in the Trucking Industry Defense Association annual meeting in San Diego in October, 2008. John will work with a group of technology-industry representatives and TIDA attorneys to present up-to-date onboard safety technologies and to address legal issues that arise in trucking claims regarding these technological advances.

  • John Lane attended the Winter 2008 meeting of the Conference of Freight Counsel, a group of attorneys throughout the country who handle freight loss and damage claims in all modes of transportation. John's case of Travelers a/s/o Summit Transportation, involving an important decision on the use of "course of dealing" to provide details of an agreement to limit liability in a cargo claim, was featured at the conference. See the Articles page for further details of this case.

  • Peter Bobchin and John Lane attended the October 2007 annual meeting of the Trucking Industry
    Defense Association in Atlanta.
The program emphasized such topics as jury selection in trucking
cases, defending drivers and company representatives at deposition, in-truck technology, and much
    more.

  • UPDATE to the New York State Law Survey to the Trucking Industry Defense Association:
Our firm has just issued the 2007 update of the New York State Law Survey to the Trucking Industry Defense Association website.  We have had the privilege of authoring and maintaining the New York Law Survey since its inception, more than ten years ago.  For members of TIDA, we urge that you visit the TIDA website (www.tida.org/tida/) to review the Law Survey for states of importance to you.

  • John Lane attended the recent biennial Transportation Mega conference sponsored by the American Bar Association in March 2007.
This educational program in New Orleans, was especially well-planned and provided valuable topic segments, ranging from an in-depth presentation on closed-head injuries to a lively discussion on the early settlement of catastrophic casualty claims, and many topics in between. John also had the opportunity to visit with peers and friends from places far and wide.

The Conference meets twice per year to discuss in depth the noteworthy legal developments of the past half-year, and to compare the varying treatment of similar types of claims by courts throughout the country.
